In addition to the Museum itself, we always present new exhibitions. The exhibitions focus on the society of yesterday and today, on life in Wallonia and on Man. The temporary exhibition space on the second floor of the Museum is mainly reserved for original projects created from the collections. The Espace Saint-Antoine hosts exhibitions created in collaboration with other cultural partners.
"Absolutely everything passed through it: from my daughter's holey sock to my son's Legos, including my vibrator, my anxiolytics, everything, absolutely everything." – Barbara Iweins
After an exhausting eleventh move, Barbara Iweins, a Brussels-based photographer and artist, embarked on a unique introspective project: photographing each of the 12,795 objects in her home, indexing and categorizing them by color, material, frequency of use, and more. The ambitious Katalog project lasted over four years.
A trench coat that recalls a humorous event in a sad hospital, a cup that evokes a sibling's disaffection, a child's toy that personifies the memory of a neglected dog, iPhone cases that reveal the tricks of a teenager, or a broken hot water bottle that retains the pain of a separation... Through this quirky inventory, Barbara Iweins summons the mnemonic power of objects and invites us to share a fascinating collective and personal memory.
The artist didn't just photograph 12,795 objects; she also analyzed them. She created statistics that give the narrative an absurd and irresistible logic. Some delicious examples: “90% of gloves are lost within two weeks of being acquired,” “The total amount spent on all the objects in the house is estimated at €121,046,” “37% of the Playmobil in the house are bald,” or “I have the weakness of believing that I am the only person in the world who knows that the dominant color of her house is blue (16%).”
Barbara Iweins, a neurotic collector, feels an irresistible need to impose order on chaos. Light and tinged with self-deprecation, her monumental project Katalog is nevertheless a true work of visual anthropology, which fits naturally within the Musée de la Vie wallonne, whose history is written daily, among other things, through objects.
